Since 1992, the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) has been celebrated annually on 3rd December around the world.
It’s aim: ‘to re-affirm and draw attention to the rights of people who live with disabilities’.
This year LCiL will again host a #lcil24 newsroom for 24 hours to capture the stories of disability innovation from projects around the globe especially those advocating the Social Model for people with disabilities.
The #lcil24 newsroom will run in 3 phases:
Phase 1 Social Media Cafe ‘Super Friday’
Friday 2nd December 12.00 – 5.00pm
The venue is our home at the West End Centre and if you wish to come along with friends, family, work colleagues or bring people your organisation supports please join us for a ‘Pay As You Feel’ lunch provided by The Real Junk Food Project.
There will be an interesting mix of short talks, films, activities and stalls to visit throughout the West End Centre. Please let us know if you wish to have a stall or offer an activity.
Phase 2 Newsroom After Dark
Friday 2nd December 6.00pm – Saturday 3rd 9.00am
A small dedicated team will be staying awake for the whole 24 hours and be joined throughout by guests contributing their own personal stories and experiences both in the newsroom and via social media channels like Skype, Twitter and Facebook.
Phase 3 Social Media Cafe ‘Special Olympics Brunch’
Saturday 3rd December 9.00am-12.00
We ‘look back’ on the SOL2009 event in Leicester when the city turned orange and ‘look forward’ to the 2017 Sheffield National Games with local athletes currently training hard to represent Team East Midlands.
The theme for this year’s International Day is “Achieving 17 Goals for the Future We Want”. This theme notes the recent adoption of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the role of these goals in building a more inclusive and equitable world for persons with disabilities. There is an infographic attached.
We hope you will join us to mark the 2016 UN Day and look forward to seeing you here at the West End Centre.

Here are some ways you can take part and it’s your choice how you do:
1. Speak to us via skype between 12 midday Friday 2nd and 12 midday Saturday 3rd December. (just let me know your skype name so we can test it in advance).
2. Make a short film (or use a film you already have) for us to share on social media about your work e.g. post on You Tube and we will share the link via our twitter, facebook, instagram etc.
3. Take part in a Twitter Question & Answer session. (are you currently using twitter?)
4. Email some images of your work for us to distribute via our social media channels.
It’s all meant to be informative and a more proactive positive way of promoting the work of organisations supporting disabled people across the world.
We hope you will join us to mark the 2016 UN Day and look forward to connecting via social media.
